The Pint, the Widget, and the MSP: Why a Learner’s Mindset Outperforms the Latest Tech
Technology in the MSP world moves fast. Sometimes faster than the people who use it, sell it, or support it. But our real competitive edge doesn’t always come from having the newest tools, scripts, or automations. It often comes from staying adaptable, curious, and building the kind of client experience people remember.
To explore this, we’ll look at one of my favourite examples of unexpected innovation: the humble “widget” inside a can of Guinness. In a 2004 survey, consumers actually voted this tiny plastic ball a greater invention than the Internet. The INTERNET! That tells us something important: people don’t know what they don’t know. They chase shiny things. Most avoid anything that feels complicated, and often overlook transformative innovations simply because they don’t understand them yet. Sound familiar?
Guinness not only reimagined how beer could be delivered — they mastered the art of storytelling. Even the iconic “waiting for the pint to settle” ritual wasn’t just chemistry; it was brilliant experience design. It turned impatience into anticipation, and a pour into a story.
In this session, I’ll use the widget and the pour as a metaphor for how MSPs can differentiate themselves in a crowded, fast-moving industry. We’ll explore how simplifying complexity, creating memorable client experiences, and embracing a learner’s mindset can help you stand out — even if you’re not the most technical person in the room (which I’m happy to admit I’m not).
